(R)evolution Medicine
Circling Together and with the Land

Evolving while Re-membering, Rising while (R)evolutionizing

8-month in-person and land-based course
healing through the re-circularization* of ourselves with the web of life
founded upon Holistic Science and Indigenous Circle teachings
begins Sunday Nov. 12th 2023

There are no straight lines in nature.

* "Human societies that think and believe life functions in a linear mode have forgotten that life is a great and sacred circle of relationships...My prime motivation has been to bring about a spiritual healing, the re-circularization that we all need so desperately if we wish to prevent the loss of the Circle - that is, of life, this marvelous gift that we possess as a species belonging to the Circle." - Georges Sioui, Huron-Wendat First Nation

REVOLUTION MEDICINE IS

Decolonizing our minds, bodies, spirits, land and communities from linear rule,

Liberating our nonlinear and circular (I)indigenous knowledges and gifts of medicine

Participating in the healing of all our relations at all levels of life

Facilitated by Dr. Laura Batson, (mother, artist, poet, author, and naturopathic doctor)

"I am experiencing more and more, in clinical practice, people feeling a loss of hope, of purpose, or feel like they don't belong to this world anymore.

Anxiety, depression, addiction, and physical illness thrive in such conditions, so does a culture of materialism, extractive capitalism, and abuse of power. All of which destroy the planet, perpetuate chronic disease, and further obscure people from their deeper meaning and purpose. I created (R)evolution medicine to help address these complex and interconnected issues in simple and holistic ways.

For the past 20 years I have been unpacking Spirit-guided teachings, along with teachings from holistic science, naturopathic medicine, traditional and Indigenous knowledges, and those that have come through my own paths of healing. I am understanding more and more what is broken and what needs to be healed at all levels of life. My answer is not the only answer. I believe we are all connected to knowledge and messages important for the world right now. We come into this world carrying knowledge and gifts that already belong here in the web of life. And if we can remember those knowledges and gifts, and weave them together in participation with the more-than-human-world, we might just realize the meaning and purpose of our being in this web of life, and contribute to the kind of healing that Sioui refers to as 'a spiritual healing, the re-circularization that we all need so desperately if we wish to prevent the loss of the Circle - that is, of life, this marvelous gift that we possess as a species belonging to the Circle.'

I want to share with you the particular messages that have been teaching through me and that I'm coming to understand about what is broken and needs healing in ourselves and the world.

It comes to me in symbolic language as: we have flattened our curves and broken the circle.

“our curve” = our unique soul-expression in this world (our unique purpose and gifts that we are born into this world carrying) and our non-linear ways of knowing (our intuitive, creative, embodied and spirit-led ways of knowing). Our Curves have been suppressed, silenced, standardized and reduced to fit the lines and boxes of colonial conformity. We are living up to a flattened potential of ourselves. We are lost to ourselves and hurting. And the whole world suffers from the lack of your true potential and gifts in this world.

“the circle” = the circular worldview/cosmology found in traditional and Indigenous cultures (a way of seeing and knowing ourselves as interconnected and interdependent beings in deep reciprocal relationship with the web of life, where everything has its place and purpose in the whole and follows the natural and spiritual laws of the Land and Stars). The Circle has been cut and broken by colonial rule, replaced by a linear worldview/cosmology of disconnection, materialism and the laws of people in positions of privilege and power.

In (R)evolution Medicine, we liberate our curves from linear rule, we re-circularize our worldviews and ways of knowing, we re-member our (I)indigenous knowledges and land-based principles of organization and we bring our gifts of knowledge and medicine into deep reciprocal relationship with one-another and the more-than-human world, again, contributing to a kind of healing that is truly revolutionary." - Dr. Laura Batson

8th Fire Documentary by Anishinabe Elder, Dave Courchene, Turtle Lodge, Manitoba

ABOUT  Dr. Laura Batson, ND

Out of nowhere, while I was walking through campus during my first year of university, studying biology at Western, I heard the words: "You don't have to come back next year"... I was taken aback. Of course I would come back. I always go back to school, every year. I love school. I'm on a path straight to medical school. But this voice kept saying "Yes but you don't have to."

The more I thought about it, the more I realized: I don't have to go to school next year. So I didn't.

That September I took some art classes and began writing more creatively (and making curve art) and found myself trekking in the mountains of Nepal and hanging out with Monks and studying Buddhism and Taoism and quantum physics and drawing circles between it all and whenever I would doubt my nonlinear path, I continued to hear this little voice nudging me to stay off the line and consoling me when I would fall...and I came to realize that this voice was not coming from nowhere. It was coming from somewhere. It was Spirit, an Ancestor. I call her Spirit Grandmother.

That decision to 'step off the line' from the straight path to medical school changed the course of my life fundamentally, and over 20 years later, has become the non-linear path that has led to the creation of this course. (for a fuller version of that story please see the video: "When I First stepped off the Line").

I did return to university after taking that year off but I knew the linear path to become a medical doctor was no longer my path. I remember reading this passage from an alternative medicine textbook and something clicked:

“In ancient and Indigenous healing systems, medicine was not about the putting of things into the body but using external resources to help mobilize the internal resources of the body. The body heals itself and maintains it’s own health.”

Rather than medical school, I enrolled in a postgraduate degree in Holistic Science at Schumacher College in the UK, where I was immersed in land-based knowledge systems, sacred science, complexity theory and systems thinking, Gaia Theory and Deep Ecology, the politics of anarchy and societal self-organization, the practice of intuition, spirit-dialogue and art-making as guides for scientific inquiry, while living in community, close to nature's rhythms, eating apples grown from our forest garden, taking turns churning the compost, and excitedly discussing with Brian Goodwin (mathematician, systems biologist, and my thesis supervisor), how the ambiguity of gene meanings meant that biological healing was a creative process, while we washed the dishes and looked out over a garden of wildflowers. Intelligence and magic all at once.

Upon graduating, I was called to put this knowledge into practice as a holistic medical practitioner who honoured the wholeness and sacredness of healing, the power of plants and creativity in healing, and the recognition of one's innate ability to heal themselves.  This led me to complete a 4 year degree in naturopathic medicine from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Toronto.

After a decade of practicing one-on-one with clients in a more-or-less square room with a square view, it became apparent that the colonized version of naturopathic medicine had significant limits; the deepest form of this medicine was to be practiced in circle, in community, on the Land. To come into form fully, I would need to source deeper Indigenous healing knowledges, like those from my own ancestral lineages from West Africa, and those I came to know while working and traveling ancient Egypt for 3 years, and those knowledges that I've had the honour of learning from Indigenous Elders of Turtle Island (Canada).  It is from these knowledge systems that deeper understandings came together and I realized what was needing to be restored at all levels of life for true healing to happen. Everything I had been studying and experiencing over my life journey of "stepping off the line" all spoke variations of the same message: we need to liberate our curves and re-circularize our cosmologies. Healing happens as a natural consequence of this.

Revolution Medicine was born from here.

"Human societies that think and believe life functions in a linear mode have forgotten that life is a great and sacred circle of relationships...My prime motivation has been to bring about a spiritual healing, the re-circularization that we all need so desperately if we wish to prevent the loss of the Circle - that is, of life, this marvelous gift that we possess as a species belonging to the Circle."

The book

The book of Curvature came together while living in Egypt, pregnant with my son and re-membering together all that I was coming to know about nonlinearity and curvature in science and math and art and healing and nature and Indigenous ways of knowing. The spirit teachings and stories and art and science in this book are what found the teachings of (R)evolution Medicine.

The Curvature Book by Laura Batson

CURVATURE: THE SCIENCE AND SOUL OF NONLINEARITY

“Integrating art, science, and spiritual wisdom, Laura Batson explores in a unique way what may be the most important development in twenty-first-century thought: the recognition of the importance of nonlinearity. A beautiful and inspiring book!”

 — Fritjof Capra, author of  The Tao of Physics, and The Web of Life

Many of us find ourselves living lives in straight paths (following the straight and narrow), always reaching for the next goal but seldom remembering who we are. We have forgotten how to turn into ourselves. Our souls are naturally curvaceous. They want to turn into themselves. But we have forgotten the language of Curvature. We have forgotten how to become the potential we were meant to become.

Curves know how to make themselves.

Straight lines don't;

They need rulers to guide them.

Yours is a Nation of Curvature.

You have been flattened by rulers

but you have not forgotten the way

liberate your curve

child!

fiercely

fearlessly

freely
