What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy that combines counselling with the tool of hypnosis.
Hypnosis is simply a state of focused concentration, bypassing the conscious mind, allowing you access to your subconscious mind. It is a normal, natural state of mind that people experience every day (examples would be spacing out in a class or in a meeting, losing focus when driving but not falling asleep or driving off the road, etc). When we are in the hypnotic state, part of our mind interprets guided images and suggestions as real experiences (just like when we are having partly real experiences by watching a movie). By giving our minds a new experience (such as feeling calm and safe when confronted with something that used to cause stress) we can change our automatic reactions going forward. While hypnosis can be used for entertainment on a stage, in a therapeutic setting it can be used as a gentle and effective way to create change in one’s life.
When in hypnosis, one is always in complete control. It is often described as a feeling of deep relaxation, similar to guided meditation, and has been referred to as a ‘spa for the mind’ sensation. Hypnotherapy is done with a client, not to a client, and effective hypnotherapy will not occur until a client is knowledgeable and comfortable with hypnosis, having created a plan together with their therapist.
